Retreats + Offsites

Step outside the everyday—and discover what becomes possible when your team’s strengths come together.

I design and facilitate customized strengths-based retreats and offsites that help people understand what they bring, recognize the capacities around them, and make more intentional choices about how they work together.

Each experience combines individual insight, meaningful conversation, and dynamic activities shaped around your team, its culture, and the moment it is navigating.

When a retreat can help

A retreat creates space to step back from immediate demands and pay attention to the team itself: what is working, what is changing, and how people want to move forward together.

Strengths-based team development can be particularly useful when a team is:

  • Growing quickly

  • Preparing for a new strategic chapter

  • Welcoming new members

  • Navigating organizational or leadership change

  • Experiencing friction or strained collaboration

  • Clarifying roles, expectations, or ways of working

  • Seeking greater trust and more productive dialogue

  • Trying to preserve what makes its culture special as it evolves

Retreats can also be valuable when you want to build on what is already working. They offer teams an opportunity to strengthen relationships, recognize what they have achieved together, and become more deliberate about how they use their collective capacity.

Why begin with strengths?

Teams often gather to address what is missing: a communication problem, a capability gap, or a relationship that needs repair. Those concerns may be real, but beginning only with problems can obscure the capacities already available to meet them.

A strengths-based approach asks:

What do we have within and between us—and how can we put it to work?

This gives the team a practical map of its collective capacity. People become better able to recognize one another’s contributions, distribute work intentionally, ask for what they need, and notice where a strength may be overused or leaving a blind spot.

The result is more than greater self-awareness. It is a team better equipped to coordinate, adapt, and respond together when the work asks something new of them.

The retreat begins before the team enters the room

The most meaningful retreats are not isolated events. Preparation gives participants a shared foundation so that the time together can move beyond introductions to deeper application.

Whether you are planning a company retreat, leadership-team offsite, or workshop within a larger gathering, the process is tailored to your group and desired outcomes, a typical engagement arc includes:

1. Align

We begin with the retreat sponsor or team leader to understand the organizational context, the team’s current reality, and what you want the experience to make possible.

2. Orient

I join a regularly scheduled team meeting to introduce myself, explain why we are beginning with strengths, and prepare participants for what to expect.

3. Discover

Participants complete Gallup CliftonStrengths® or VIA Character Strengths assessments. Individual debriefs help each person recognize their strengths, understand potential blind spots, and arrive with language they can use during the retreat.

4. Experience

The team comes together for a customized retreat or offsite. Through reflection, conversation, and interactive activities, participants explore how their strengths shape relationships, communication, decisions, and the work they share.

We translate insight into practical commitments, shared language, or ways of working that the team can continue using. Individual or team coaching may be added when ongoing support would be valuable.

coaching + Facilitation style

Experiential, reflective, practical

My facilitation is experiential, reflective, and grounded in how people actually learn.

Rather than spending the day presenting assessment results, I create opportunities for people to make meaning together. Participants might work with real team challenges, explore patterns through structured conversations, experiment through play, or examine how different strengths can combine around the work ahead.

I provide enough structure to keep the experience purposeful while leaving room for the intelligence, creativity, and relationships already present in the team.

The goal is for people to leave not only knowing more about their strengths, but relating and working together differently because of what they discovered.

frameworks

Choosing the right framework

Assessments are selected in service of the retreat’s purpose and your goals.

CliftonStrengths® helps people understand their recurring patterns of talent and how those patterns influence execution, relationships, strategic thinking, and influence.

VIA Character Strengths provides a shared language for capacities of character that support leadership, relationships, wellbeing, and culture.

Depending on your goals, we may use one framework or a thoughtfully selected combination. Executive-team retreats may also incorporate the Leadership Circle Profile™ (360 evaluations).

planning for your retreat or offsite

A strengths-based retreat usually requires at least one month of preparation. Larger groups or more complex engagements may benefit from additional lead time, particularly when individual assessment debriefs are included.

Retreats may be designed as:

  • A focused half-day workshop

  • A full-day team retreat or offsite

  • A multi-day gathering

  • Part of a broader meeting, leadership program, or organizational event

The timeline and format depend on the size of the group, the desired outcomes, and how much preparation or follow-through will best support the team.

Retreats are available in English and Spanish, virtually or in person. I am based in Washington, DC and travel for organizational engagements.

Scaling without losing what makes you special: #samsales consulting

As #samsales Consulting grew, its leadership team wanted to preserve the energetic, generous, highly relational, and playful culture that made the organization distinctive—while becoming more intentional about how they worked together.

Our engagement began with CliftonStrengths® assessments and individual debriefs, followed by a facilitated team retreat designed around the organization’s culture and stage of growth. The work created a shared language for understanding individual contributions, team dynamics, and the strengths they could build upon together.

The relationship later expanded into individual and group coaching for members of the executive team, supporting the continued application of their insights as the organization evolved.

What could become possible for your team?

A complimentary conversation gives us an opportunity to explore the moment your team is navigating, what you hope the retreat will make possible, and the format that would best support those outcomes.
